KIDSBOOKS | BRAVE LITTLE MEG

Little Meg was a field ant
She had a wooden leg
She couldn’t crawl like the others did
She hoppity-hopped instead

She could not carry heavy crumbs
Of fruits and grains and sweets
She could only hoppity-hop
So she didn’t go on hunting sprees

While the rest of the colony
Went searching for their food
Little Meg stayed in the nest
And swept and cleaned their rooms

One day it rained for five whole hours
Flooding the whole world
Little Meg’s home too filled up
As the mud and leaves all swirled

The Queen then gathered all the ants
Something had to be done
A bridge to cross to higher ground
Away from the dangerous currents

Little Meg with her wooden leg
Hoppity-hopped to the front
“Your majesty with my Neem tree leg
I will get this job done”

While the other ants made mud balls
Little Meg went on ahead
She dropped each one in the rushing flow
And hoppity-hopped to place the next

Little Meg with her wooden leg
Got thousands to dry land
They still sing songs of her courage
That brave little field ant

KIDSBOOKS | CICI THE CHILLI PEPPER

Cici was a chilli pepper
She sat in the Greens section
She was red and shiny
She’d just come out of the sun

She’d held onto her little stem
For ninety days all spring
And when she was big and strong
She was plucked and brought in

A gentleman in a little hat
Stopped by the veggie aisle
He dipped his hand in the chilli stand
And filled his bag with a smile

Cici had a little scar
Near where her stem had been
It had grown a little bit
In the last day or three

The other chilli peppers
Looked at their sibling
What if the gent didn’t like that dent
And threw her in the bin!

As the days went by, the gent
Cooked up delicious meals
All the other peppers became
A part of his food history

Only little Cici now
Remained in the airtight jar
She had grown very afraid
A bitter end didn’t seem too far!

That evening when the sun still shone
The gent took out Cici
She watched him as he gently took
Out her little seeds

He planted them in a pot
On his sun-shiny balcony
Little Cici is now growing
A whole new family

KIDSBOOKS | BIG-HEAD SUE

There was once a bumble bee
She had a very big head
When she tried to fly up high
She went quickly south instead

Her friends would always laugh at her
“There’s big noggin Sue!”
Big-Head Sue, would feel quite blue
If only she could be bee-utiful too!

Then in spring, Prince Charming
Thought he’d have a ball
All the ladies in the land
Were invited one and all!

Big-Head Sue was a nervous mass of
Fidgety legs, oh dear!
But she wore pretty daffodil wreaths
Around each of her feelers

It was quite a test to fly north-west
But she made it for the dance
The Prince, he was just coming in
With crown and cloak and lance

There was a murmur in the crowd
As he flew onto the floor
His crown was the biggest they’d ever seen
But his head was even more!

Prince Charming looked around the room
For a partner for his dance
He smiled as he looked at Big-Head Sue
It was the start of a new romance

KIDSBOOKS | THE LITTLE DUST BUNNY

There was once a dust bunny
She lived on top of the fridge
She’d been there for many years
Sitting just upon the edge

Sometimes when a little breeze
Blew in with nimble steps
Dusty would fluff out herself
Old hair, lint and spider webs

She’d roll around her fridge-top home
Laughing happily
Shining just a little bit
With static electricity

That was her super power you see
That tiny bit of spark
It kept her different parts together
She also glowed in the dark!

One day the lady of the house
Turned on the light switch
With a cleaning cloth in hand
She dusted down the fridge

Little Dusty ran and ran
As she was chased around
By the giant hand that held
A cloth of green and brown

She was so very afraid
She fainted for a while
And when she woke up again
She was in for a surprise

Little Dusty now could see
The whole room from up high
The tiny ball of fuzz had grown
To twice her normal size!

Dusty laughed and jumped and skipped
And off the fridge she rolled
She could run where she wanted
The whole house was now her home

VERSE | PERPETUAL (M)OCEAN

LISTEN TO THE POEM BEING READ HERE: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZSddMfkHV/?k=1
There is a ship that’s out to sea
Her cargo is my dreams
When I feel them slipping away
She drops anchor close to me

There is a ship that’s voyaging on
She carries bushels of hope
When life throws curve balls one too many
She drifts in sure and close

There is a ship out in the swells
She carries stores of peace
When chaos threatens my inner calm
She glides in gracious and serene

There is a ship, she’s the harbinger
Of all that’s tender and true
When my day is raw, sunless and sad
She sails in out of azure blues

That ship she is my spirit
My soul is in her sails
As she journeys through life’s fickle tides
She’s my alchemist within.

VERSE | A SWEET MOMENT IN TIME

Sometimes while I sit, engrossed in life
My brow lightly furrowed, concentrating
On getting the task at hand done
Running my five miles in the circle of creation

I hear a rustle, a little whisper
Of someone on the periphery of my thoughts
I glance up, as if to see the vision
Of that someone that always flits across
My mind on busy days like these
Resting otherwise in my heart;
I glance as if that heavenly soul has
Bridged our realms that are so far apart.

I look up, afraid to lose the thread
Of that feeling, that gentle touch
Of someone nestling in my core
Someone beloved, someone missed so much.
I look beyond into the blurry depths
Of my vision, desperately holding on
To that fleeting caress upon my cheek
Gifted, bestowed by a precious one.

The atoms of day, ricochet and I blink
Once, twice. I am back in the circle of life
I grope twice, three times for that lucid moment
When i was in the same space, alongside
Someone who most days quietly rests
In the warmest nooks of my being
A cherished one who on special days like this
Takes my hand, eyes twinkling as she beams!

I glance up, my soul surging with joy
For that precious moment, filling the void.
Sometimes while I sit, engrossed in life
I am touched by a beloved for a sweet moment in time.

VERSE | MAYA

I am Laughter and I am Tears
I am the apex of my most lucid Fears
I am Joy and I am Peace
I am all that the tranquil dove sees
I am Chaos, I am Discord
I am the Trodden, I am Master and Lord
I am Winter and I am Spring
I wither, I fade and I waken again
I am Rage and I am Love
I’m the depths of the ocean, I am the heavens above
I am the Devil and I am the Saint
I’m rampant, unbridled and also restrained
I am the Thundering Eye of the storm
I am the Deluge that it brings along
I am the Space Dust whirling around
Deformed defacements that once were sound
I am also the Centre of the Universe
I’m the Infinite Beauty of prose and verse
I am Kindness and I am Faith
I am Hope and I am Grace
I am the Atom, I am the Whole
I am the Body, I am the Soul
I am whoever that I want to be
I am Maya*, I am Cosmic Energy.
* MAYA: The personification of the idea that the material world is illusory. Maya is a female name in various languages. In Sanskrit, for instance, it means "illusion or magic", and is also an alternate name of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi. In the Tupi language, of southern Brazil, it means "mother". In the Māori language, it means "courage" or "bravery".

VERSE | AARGH! THE WEATHER!

I opened the curtains to the sun peeping through
Pillowy clouds were floating around - just a few
I stood at the window, the sleep fading away
I smiled - We were going on our seaside trip today!

I packed up my bag, threw in my shorts
A couple of shirts and two pairs of socks
Even by the coast I traipse around in my sneakers
I grinned as I also packed my Bluetooth speaker

I went to the kitchen to make myself tea
Put on the kettle and looked out at the sea
Visible only from that room - the irony!
I giggled - I’d soon be walking on a soft sandy beach

A steaming cup in my hand, I went to my lounge
I watched a pelican as it flew drunkenly around
It had become suddenly overcast and grey
I laughed, it was going to be a nice drive to the bay

And then I went to the loo for a minute or five
I was getting ready, my partner was about to arrive
I came out to a full fledged tropical squall
I guffawed at the tragedy of the “best laid plans” and all!

I closed the curtains, the sun had been snatched up by Zeus
It was noon but he was obviously in one of his moods
I lay down, took a deep breath, closed my eyes
I sighed - The tropical weather gods loved to surprise!

VERSE | HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL

December has arrived, nay, it’s nearly done
The end of year’s upon us, winter, it has come
I had a few wishes, resolutions and the like
That I memo’d in my mind in Jan of twenty-five

Then came February, and with it came a pall
From all the celebrations and energy of the hols
The wishes and the must-dos faded just a bit
As summer in all its brilliance laughingly swept in

Then there were vacations and baking in the sun
Barbecues and festivals, meeting precious ones
Teatime confidences, low key, calm and tender
More spirited evenings full of song and a few benders!

Fall came rustling in then, dressed in oranges and reds
The list of resolutions were almost put to bed
The dreams too were foggy, like tree tops in the mist
A far off memory, a fleeting touch upon the wrist

And now it is December, nay it is almost done
The new year is upon us, year-end it has come
There will be good intentions and bucket lists again
For hope it springs eternal, from beginning to the end.

VERSE | JOY STORY

I woke up this morning, what a fabulous day!
I glanced in the mirror, smiling away.
I made my bed, brushed my teeth, did my hair
I got myself ready, humming away.
I picked up my bag, looked out at the world
It was glimmering and dancing, shining away
I walked down the street towards my cafe
The Magnolia and Bougainville were blooming away.
I sat at a table in the veranda outside
All the feathered creatures were chirping away.
I wrapped my hands around my latte
As the mid morning breeze whispered away
I then went about my usual day
The hours peacefully ticking away
Then came evening as I sat in my lounge
The shadows of dusk lightly stretching away
I woke up this morning, with hope in my heart
The universe too gently embraced me today.

VERSE | SCHIZOMEDIA

I Laugh Out Loud as I hear him tell the joke
Of the 12 inch pianist who was quite the coincidental bloke
She Twittered delightedly out loud and on her phone

We were out and about, having coffee and conversation
About Freedom of Religion and Marijuana regulation
Facebook also heard it all through her joyful proclamation

The waiter brought our food in style, ‘here you are madam!’
He and I had pizza, she had salad with J. Statham*,
(The pleasure of his photo presence she could only fathom!)
But Instagram was hit with #handsomeboy and #foodgasm

We were done with lunch now, chatting over cherry flan
When there was a bustle and in walked Fawad Khan*
Of course she put the video on Snapchat for all her fans

Three hours later, satiated, our day updated digitally
While saying goodbye, he tripped outside and fell on the concrete
TikTok later showed us all how hilarious tragedy can be

And there you have it, dear friends and frenemies
Our lives on a platter for all the world to see
A Schizo-polar history for our bedevilled progeny.
